Horses are wonderful creatures. Show horses in particular – hunters, jumpers, dressage, and eventing – are highly trained animals that give their owners incredible joy. They are important parts of our lives and our families.
But the specter of fraud and criminality haunts the show horse industry. Every participant has been the victim of or knows many others who have been victims of fraud, deception, cheating, drugging, and outright theft. Court battles have been fought over allegations of fraud. Innocent buyers or sellers have been swindled. Horses have been injured or have died because of these activities. While no one knows the true extent of the fraud, surely millions of dollars are lost every single year by victims, wealthy and not so wealthy, of horse fraud.
